When I had my insight into the Three Principles, it was incredibly clear and simple (well, at least it was for me).
We all make up our thinking. We believe it. We all act out from it. It informs EVERYTHING in our experience of life. And most of us have absolutely no idea that this is happening, including myself, for the first 51 years of my life.
What I also saw was that all of our suffering in life stems from us not realizing who and what we are, not realizing that we are already enough, not realizing that we are all already worthy.
And so when any type of our made-up insecure thinking pops up in our heads about how we compare to others, we believe it. AND because the insecure thinking and feeling “makes us suffer”, we spend most of our lives doing things to get rid of it:
We are driven to achieve because of it
We are blocked from action because of it
We act out from the belief in it
We are driven to distract ourselves from our thinking about it
Here’s more of what that looks like…
Because we believe we are not enough... we are driven to some actions (get more $, get a better job, get more education, get a better home, get better looking, get awards, get achievements, get more friends, get someone to love us, get a grand purpose in life, get satisfaction from helping others, get anything that for us represents better than how we are now)
Because we believe we are not enough… we get stuck and blocked from some actions (we believe we can’t achieve specific things because of ourselves or our circumstances, we become afraid and fearful of trying)
Because we believe we are not enough… we act out from the belief in it, or we do whatever makes sense in our heads to somehow prove the opposite to ourselves or others (we hide, we cover up, we avoid, we fight, we bully, we justify, we defend, we reason, and we often judge others as less because in doing so we can feel better by knowing that we are more)
Because we believe we are not enough (and it feels really crappy and uncontrollable)… we are driven to either do things to distract ourselves from our crappy thinking/feeling or to give ourselves some sense of being in control (drinking, watching TV, gambling, shopping, sleeping, eating, cutting, exercising, achieving, shopping, bullying, or whatever else works for us). Even though we may have some sense that the long terms effects of some of the behaviours are destructive, they still distract us enough momentarily from something that actually feels worse, something that we don't understand, and something that we don't know how to get rid of, because we don’t realize the power and illusions of our thinking around it.
In all of these behaviours, we are simply doing our best in the moment to manage our own suffering. And the lack of understanding of who we really are, combined with the belief in our crazy made up thinking, is the source of all of it.
The reason why this was so clear to me was because I saw and felt the truth of our experience of life. I saw for myself what it was like to be in a state of understanding of the truth of our perfect wellbeing, and to be in a state of unconditional love for myself, for all people, for all things, and to see the perfection of life, exactly as it is.
Seeing it for myself, I realized that if everyone were to experience their own version of the same, and see through the illusions of their own particular made up insecure thinking, they'd have the freedom to just “be and play” and participate joyfully in the game of life, without comparison. And whenever their head was clear, they would experience the utmost reverence and respect and compassion and understanding for all their fellow human beings, noticing that they are also playing the same game, sometimes joyful, and also sometimes temporarily caught up in their own unique versions of insecure thinking.
If this resonates with you at all, and you’d like to learn more, there are tons of free resources available throughout this website. Alternatively, if you feel like you could use something more, my own coaching services are available, along with those of many other practitioners (their free and paid services and programs are listed on their websites, which are in turn posted on the Resources page of this site).
May I wish you well on the journey of discovering the wonder of our common humanity.

This is very nicely put, Jonelle, thank you! As you say, seeing that we ARE okay, and that we do not have to believe our thinking truly changes everything.

Thanks Steve, and I agree! Of course, I could just be making that up!
